Executive Summary: Online Marriage in Pakistan Through a Wakeel
What the service is
We draft the power of attorney appointing a wakeel, guide its attestation abroad, arrange the Nikah in Pakistan with a Nikah Khawan and registrar, connect the absent party by video, register the marriage and help obtain the NADRA certificate and documents for a spouse visa.
Who needs it
Overseas Pakistanis who cannot travel, Pakistanis marrying a foreign national living abroad, and couples where one party is in Pakistan and the other is working or studying overseas and wants the Nikah done without delay.
Fee basis
The fee is quoted after the documents are reviewed, because it depends on the country, the attestation route, whether both parties are abroad and whether visa paperwork is needed. We confirm it in writing before starting.
Time it usually takes
Most of the time goes into getting the power of attorney signed and attested abroad and couriered or verified in Pakistan. After that, the Nikah can be scheduled quickly. Registration and certificates take further time; we give ranges, never guarantees.
How to start
WhatsApp +92 333 1127830 with both parties' CNIC, NICOP or passport copies and your country of residence. We reply the same working day with the steps and attestation route for your country.
Advocate-led since 1985
Our firm has been advocate-led since 1985. Overseas Nikah files are handled by Tahir Pervez Qureshi and Khalid Mumtaz, Advocates High Court, who draft the power of attorney and check every document before the ceremony.
How Online Marriage in Pakistan Works
Islamic law has long recognised Nikah through a representative. The absent party appoints a wakeel in writing, and the wakeel attends the Nikah in Pakistan, hears the offer and gives acceptance on the principal's behalf before witnesses. The video call allows the absent party to see the ceremony and confirm consent, but the legal act is performed through the wakeel.
We prefer this route over a Nikah conducted only by video, because a properly attested power of attorney leaves a clear paper trail that registrars, NADRA and foreign embassies can rely on.
Legal Requirements for an Online Nikah
- Both parties must be adults, 18 or over; our firm does not arrange any Nikah involving a minor.
- The free consent of the bride is essential, whether she is in Pakistan or abroad.
- An adult Muslim woman may marry without her wali's consent (Hafiz Abdul Waheed v. Asma Jehangir, PLD 2004 SC 219).
- The absent party must appoint the wakeel by a written power of attorney that names the other party.
- Two adult witnesses must attend the Nikah in Pakistan.
- Where either party was married before, proof that the earlier marriage has ended is needed.
Where the parties are of different faiths, the marriage requires specific legal advice before any arrangements are made.
The Power of Attorney: Drafting and Attestation
The power of attorney should name the principal and the wakeel, identify the person to be married, state the dower and any agreed conditions, and authorise the wakeel to sign the Nikah Nama. A vague document invites questions from the registrar.
It is usually signed before the Pakistani embassy or consulate in the country of residence, or notarised and then authenticated in the manner that country and Pakistan accept. Once in Pakistan, attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may also be required. We confirm the correct route for your country before you sign.
Step-by-Step Online Marriage in Pakistan
- Share identity documents of both parties and agree the dower and conditions.
- We draft the power of attorney appointing the wakeel and send it to you.
- The absent party signs and has it attested at the Pakistani mission or authenticated as advised.
- The original or verified copy reaches us in Pakistan, with further attestation if needed.
- The Nikah is held in Pakistan with the wakeel, witnesses and a Nikah Khawan, while the absent party joins by video.
- The Nikah Nama is registered with the Nikah Registrar and the Union Council.
Choosing a Wakeel for Online Marriage in Pakistan
The wakeel should be an adult the absent party trusts, usually a close relative such as a father, brother or uncle, who will be in Pakistan on the date of the Nikah. He or she must carry a valid CNIC and attend in person. The power of attorney should name the wakeel exactly as on the CNIC.
Where no suitable relative is available, the absent party may appoint another trusted person. We discuss the choice in advance, because the wakeel signs the Nikah Nama and may later be asked to confirm what took place.
Limiting and Revoking the Power of Attorney
The power of attorney for a Nikah should be limited to that one purpose: marrying the named person on agreed terms. It should not give general powers over property or bank accounts. Once the Nikah is registered its purpose is complete, and the principal may also revoke it formally in writing if there is any concern.

Common Problems We Prevent
- Names on the power of attorney that do not match the CNIC or passport.
- Attestation done in a way the registrar or embassy does not accept.
- Dower and conditions left blank, then filled in differently on the day.
- Missing proof that an earlier marriage has ended.
- A Nikah performed but never registered, leaving no certificate for the visa file.
Updating NICOP and Family Records
After registration, the spouses may need to update their marital status with NADRA, for example on a CNIC, NICOP or family registration certificate. A foreign spouse may later apply for a Pakistan Origin Card or visa where eligible. These steps rely on the computerised marriage registration certificate, so keep several attested copies.
Registration and the NADRA Marriage Certificate
Registration follows the same path as any Nikah. The Nikah Registrar records the marriage, and the Union Council enters it in NADRA's system and issues the computerised marriage registration certificate. Overseas spouses often need this certificate for their own records, for NICOP updates and for visa applications. We follow up the process; timings vary and are not guaranteed. See NADRA marriage certificate facts.
Documents for a Spouse Visa After Online Marriage in Pakistan
Each country sets its own spouse visa rules, so always check the embassy's current list. In our experience, embassies commonly ask for the following documents, which we help to prepare and have attested:
| Document | Issued by | Usual extra step |
|---|---|---|
| Nikah Nama | Nikah Registrar | Attestation by MOFA; certified English translation |
| NADRA marriage registration certificate | Union Council through NADRA | Attestation by MOFA |
| Power of attorney used for the Nikah | Signed abroad | Kept with its attestation record |
| CNIC/NICOP and passports | NADRA / passport office | Clear copies of all pages requested |
| Evidence of the relationship | The couple | Photographs, call records and messages, as the embassy asks |
Foreign Nationals Marrying Pakistanis
We have arranged Nikahs between Pakistanis and spouses from many countries. A foreign national's passport, proof of marital status from the home country and, for a Muslim spouse, any document the registrar requests will be needed. Requirements of the foreign spouse's own country for recognising the marriage should be checked with its embassy.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Nikah through a wakeel valid in Pakistan?
Nikah through a representative appointed in writing is recognised. The absent party appoints a wakeel by power of attorney, the wakeel accepts the Nikah before witnesses in Pakistan, and the marriage is registered with the Nikah Registrar in the ordinary way.
Can the Nikah be done only on a video call?
We advise against relying on a video call alone. We use video so the absent party can see the ceremony and confirm consent, but the legal acceptance is given by a wakeel under an attested power of attorney, which registrars and embassies can rely on.
Where do I sign the power of attorney abroad?
Usually at the Pakistani embassy or consulate in your country, or before a notary followed by the authentication your country and Pakistan accept. Further attestation in Pakistan may also be required. We confirm the route for your country first.
Can both bride and groom be abroad?
Yes. Each may appoint a wakeel in Pakistan by separate power of attorney. Both attorneys then attend the Nikah with witnesses, while the parties join by video. Each document must be attested properly.
Will we receive a NADRA marriage certificate?
Yes, after the Nikah is registered, the Union Council issues the computerised certificate through NADRA's system. Timing varies by Union Council, so we follow up rather than promise a date.
Does the bride need her guardian's permission?
An adult Muslim woman may marry of her own free will without her wali's consent, as held in Hafiz Abdul Waheed v. Asma Jehangir (PLD 2004 SC 219). Her free consent is essential, and she must be 18 or over.
Can a Pakistani marry a foreign national this way?
Yes. We arrange Nikahs between Pakistanis and foreign spouses. The foreign spouse's passport and proof of marital status are usually required, and the recognition rules of the foreign country should be checked with its embassy.
What documents will the embassy want for a spouse visa?
Commonly the Nikah Nama and NADRA marriage certificate, attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with English translations, plus passports and evidence of the relationship. Always check the embassy's current list.
What if the parties are of different religions?
Interfaith marriages require specific legal advice before any arrangements are made. Contact us with the details and an advocate will advise on your particular situation before any date is fixed or documents are signed.
How much does an online Nikah cost?
The fee is quoted after the documents are reviewed. It depends on the country, attestation route, whether one or both parties are abroad and whether visa paperwork is needed. We confirm it before starting.
