Online Nikah in Karachi: Marrying When One Spouse Is Abroad

Online Nikah in Karachi usually means a Nikah in which one spouse — often living abroad — takes part through a lawfully appointed vakil (agent) in Karachi, while following the ceremony by video call. The Nikah itself still takes place physically, at our office, before a Nikah Registrar and two adult Muslim witnesses, and is then registered with the Union Council like any other marriage.

Karachi Lawyers has assisted overseas Pakistanis and foreign spouses since 1985. Our Gulistan-e-Jauhar office (Mezzanine Floor, Muneer Mobile Mall, Block 17, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi) and DHA Phase 7 office handle the paperwork. Start by sending passport or CNIC copies of both parties on WhatsApp to +92 333 1127830.

How online Nikah in Karachi works in practice

Classical Islamic law recognises Nikah through an agent. The absent party appoints a vakil by a written authority, and the vakil accepts or offers on their behalf in the Nikah gathering. A video link lets the absent spouse see and hear the ceremony and confirm consent, but the legal act is the vakil's acceptance in front of the witnesses.

Because the arrangement depends on the authority document, the wording, signature and attestation of the vakalat matter. A poorly drafted authority is the most common reason an online Nikah later meets problems at an embassy.

Who can use online Nikah in Karachi

  • Adults aged 18 or over; the Sindh Child Marriages Restraint Act 2013 applies in Karachi.
  • Overseas Pakistanis unable to travel for the Nikah date.
  • Pakistanis marrying foreign nationals, where the foreign spouse is Muslim or the applicable law otherwise permits the marriage.
  • Couples where both are adults, consent freely and have no legal bar such as an undissolved earlier marriage.

Documents for online Nikah in Karachi

From the spouse abroad

  • Passport and, for Pakistanis, NICOP or CNIC.
  • A signed authority appointing the vakil, attested as the receiving authorities require (often through the Pakistani mission abroad).
  • Proof of divorce or the death of a previous spouse, if applicable.

From the spouse in Karachi

  • CNIC and photographs.
  • Details of two adult Muslim witnesses with CNICs.
  • Any earlier divorce papers, if applicable.

Step-by-step online Nikah process

  1. Document check by WhatsApp so we can confirm the right form of authority.
  2. Drafting the vakalat and arranging its signature and attestation abroad.
  3. Fixing a date and time that suits both time zones.
  4. Nikah at our Karachi office: the Nikah Registrar conducts ijab-o-qabool with the vakil, witnesses present and the absent spouse on video.
  5. Completion and signature of the Nikah Nama.
  6. Union Council registration and, afterwards, the NADRA marriage certificate.

Will online Nikah in Karachi be accepted for a visa?

Pakistani law recognises a properly conducted Nikah through a vakil. Whether a foreign immigration authority accepts a proxy marriage for a spouse visa is a question of that country's law — some do, some ask for further evidence, and some do not recognise proxy marriages for visa purposes. Check this before choosing an online Nikah, and keep in mind that an in-person Nikah may be the safer option for some countries.

Foreign spouses marrying Pakistanis

We have assisted Nikahs between Pakistanis and spouses from many countries. For a foreign national, the passport, entry record and, where relevant, a certificate of no impediment from their own authorities may be needed. Conversion to Islam, where relevant, should be genuine and is documented separately; we do not treat it as a formality.

Online Nikah in Karachi: drafting the vakalat

What the authority should state

  • Full details of the person granting the authority and the vakil.
  • The name and details of the intended spouse.
  • The dower agreed and any conditions to be recorded in the Nikah Nama.
  • Whether the delegated right of divorce is to be granted.
  • Authority to sign the Nikah Nama on the principal's behalf.

Signature and attestation

The authority is usually signed before the Pakistani mission or a notary abroad and then attested as required. We confirm the format with you before signature.

Online Nikah in Karachi and the Nikah Nama

The vakil signs the Nikah Nama for the absent party, and the vakalat is referred to in the form. The columns on dower, talaq-e-tafweez and the existing-wife declaration must be completed exactly as the absent party instructed. See our Nikah Nama guide.

Common problems with online Nikah

  • An authority that does not name the spouse or the dower.
  • Witnesses who did not hear the offer and acceptance.
  • No record that the absent party saw and confirmed the ceremony.
  • Foreign authorities that do not recognise proxy marriage for visas.

Online Nikah in Karachi compared with an in-person Nikah

Both are valid Nikahs. The choice depends on travel, timing and what the foreign authorities will accept.

Time zones and planning the ceremony

When one spouse is in North America and the other in Karachi, a ceremony at a convenient office hour in Karachi may be the middle of the night abroad. We fix the date only after the authority document has arrived, and we test the video link the day before. Both families can follow the ceremony online if they wish.

  • Send the signed and attested vakalat by courier well before the date.
  • Share the names and CNICs of the two witnesses in advance.
  • Confirm the dower amount and conditions in writing.
  • Test the video call and keep a backup phone line.

Registration and certificates after the ceremony

The Nikah Registrar registers the marriage with the Union Council for the area where he is licensed in Karachi. Once registered, the computerised marriage certificate can be obtained and, for use abroad, the Nikah Nama and certificate attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We courier attested copies to the spouse abroad.

Some embassies also ask to see evidence of the relationship before the marriage, such as messages and photographs. Keep these, as they are often requested in spouse-visa applications.

Is online Nikah right for you?

Online Nikah suits couples where one spouse cannot travel and the foreign country accepts a Nikah through an agent. It is less suitable where the spouse-visa rules require both parties to be present, or where families dispute the marriage. Before you choose online Nikah, check the visa rules of the country where you will live.

For many overseas Pakistanis, online Nikah has meant marrying on the planned date despite travel restrictions or visa delays. We review the documents first and tell you honestly whether online Nikah or an in-person ceremony is the better choice.

  • Check the foreign country's position on proxy marriage.
  • Decide who will act as vakil.
  • Agree dower and conditions in writing.
  • Plan registration and attestation in advance.

After the online Nikah: your next steps

  • Collect attested copies of the Nikah Nama and certificate.
  • Update CNIC or NICOP marital status if needed.
  • Prepare the spouse-visa file in the country of residence.

Alternatives to online Nikah

If both of you can be in Pakistan, an ordinary court marriage in Karachi is simpler. Our sister site Court-Marriage.com also explains online Nikah for other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Is an online Nikah valid in Pakistan?

A Nikah conducted through a properly appointed vakil, with witnesses and free consent, and then registered, is recognised. The video call is a means of participation; the vakil performs the legal act.

Can both spouses be abroad?

Both can appoint vakils, but this increases the risk of the marriage being questioned abroad. Discuss your case with us first.

Will my embassy accept it?

That depends on the foreign country's rules on proxy marriage. Check before you proceed.

Is the Nikah registered?

Yes. It is registered with the Union Council under section 5 of the MFLO 1961, after which a NADRA certificate can be obtained.

How do we begin?

WhatsApp +92 333 1127830 with passport or CNIC copies of both parties.

Does the absent spouse need to be on video?

Video is not a legal requirement for a Nikah through a vakil, but we strongly recommend it as evidence of consent.

Can the vakil be a relative?

Yes, any adult the absent party trusts may be appointed.

Can a foreign spouse take part in an online Nikah?

Yes, where the marriage is lawful for both parties and the authority document is properly attested.

How long does the vakalat take to arrive?

It depends on the mission abroad and the courier. Plan the Nikah date only after it is received.

Is the online ceremony recorded?

With the parties' consent, a recording can be kept as additional evidence of consent.
