Court Marriage in Lahore is a Nikah between two consenting adults, performed at a lawyer's office by a Nikah Registrar in the presence of two adult witnesses and then registered with the Union Council. It does not take place in a courtroom. The lawyer's role is to verify the parties, prepare free-will affidavits and see the Nikah properly recorded.

Our Lahore office is at Al-Mairaj Arcade, Chauburji Chowk, Lahore, led by Muhammad Junaid Kahloon, Advocate High Court. Send both CNICs on WhatsApp to +92 333 1127835, and we will confirm the documents and an appointment time.

Court marriage in Lahore: Nikah at the law office

Executive Summary: Court Marriage in Lahore at a Glance

What the service is

We arrange a lawful Nikah for adult couples at our Lahore office: identity and age checks from the CNIC, separate affidavits of free will, the Nikah by a Nikah Registrar with two witnesses, completion of the Nikah Nama and its registration with the Union Council, followed by help with the NADRA marriage certificate.

Who needs it

Adult couples who wish to marry by their own choice, couples whose families have not organised a ceremony, overseas Pakistanis visiting Lahore for a short time, and couples who want a carefully documented Nikah with independent affidavits as evidence of free consent.

Fee basis

The fee is quoted after the documents are reviewed. It depends on the parties' circumstances — for example, whether either party was previously married or is a foreign national — and on the documents required. Government and Union Council charges are separate.

Time it usually takes

Once documents are complete, the Nikah itself can usually be arranged at a fixed appointment. Registration with the Union Council and issue of the computerised NADRA marriage certificate take further time, which varies between Union Councils; we never promise same-day registration or certificates.

How to start

Send clear photos of both CNICs, and any divorce or death certificate from a previous marriage, on WhatsApp to +92 333 1127835. We check eligibility, list what is missing and fix an appointment at the Chauburji Chowk office.

Advocate-led since 1985

Our network's advocates have practised since 1985. Lahore matters are handled by Muhammad Junaid Kahloon, Advocate High Court, with consultation and case assessment by Mohsin Ali Shah, consulting lawyer. Content on this page is reviewed by Fiaz Ahmed Khakh, Advocate Supreme Court.

Legal essentials of a valid Court Marriage in Lahore

Free consent of both parties

The Nikah is valid only if both the man and the woman agree freely. Each party signs a separate affidavit confirming age, marital status and free will, and the Nikah Registrar asks each of them directly before recording the Nikah.

Two adult witnesses

The offer and acceptance must take place in one sitting before two adult Muslim witnesses. Under the Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in Punjab, the witnesses are two men or one man and two women. Their CNIC details are entered on the Nikah Nama.

Dower (haq mehr)

The dower is the wife's right. Its amount and whether it is prompt or deferred are written in the Nikah Nama. It should be agreed in advance and stated clearly, because disputes about unrecorded dower are common later.

Age policy: both parties must be 18 or over

As firm policy, we assist only where both the bride and the groom are 18 or over, verified from the original CNIC. We do not arrange any Nikah involving a minor, whatever the circumstances presented. Couples should bring original CNICs; photocopies alone are not enough on the day.

Documents needed for Court Marriage in Lahore

  • Original CNICs of the bride and groom, with copies.
  • Passport and visa details if either party is a foreign national.
  • Two adult witnesses with original CNICs.
  • Recent passport-size photographs of both parties.
  • Divorce certificate, khula decree or death certificate of the former spouse, if previously married.
  • Arbitration Council permission if the husband already has a wife.

How Court Marriage in Lahore is arranged at our office

  1. You send the CNICs on WhatsApp and we confirm eligibility and documents.
  2. An appointment is fixed at the Chauburji Chowk office.
  3. Identity and age are checked from the original CNICs.
  4. Each party signs an affidavit of free will before the lawyer and an oath commissioner.
  5. The Nikah Registrar performs the Nikah before two adult witnesses.
  6. The Nikah Nama is completed, signed and thumb-marked by the parties and witnesses.
  7. The Nikah Registrar submits the Nikah Nama to the Union Council for registration.

Keep certified copies of the Nikah Nama and affidavits in a safe place. They are the primary evidence of the marriage until the NADRA certificate is issued.

What happens on the appointment day

Arrive with both parties, both witnesses and all original documents. The lawyer first meets each party separately to confirm free consent. The affidavits are then signed and attested, the dower is confirmed, and the Nikah Registrar performs the Nikah. The whole process at the office usually takes a few hours, depending on how complete the documents are.

Consent of the wali and the Supreme Court's view

In Hafiz Abdul Waheed v. Asma Jehangir (PLD 2004 SC 219), the Supreme Court of Pakistan upheld the validity of a Nikah contracted by an adult Muslim woman without her wali's consent. The principle applies across Pakistan, including Punjab. It does not remove the need for genuine free consent, which is why we take independent affidavits.

Affidavits of free will signed for a court marriage in Lahore

Union Council registration after Court Marriage in Lahore

Under section 5 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, every Muslim marriage must be registered. The Nikah Registrar licensed by the Union Council records the marriage and sends the Nikah Nama to the Union Council. Failure to register is an offence, but it does not by itself make a valid Nikah void.

After registration, the computerised NADRA marriage certificate is issued by the Union Council through NADRA's system. Timing differs between Union Councils in Lahore. See our guide to the NADRA marriage certificate.

Previously married parties and second marriage

A divorced woman must have completed her iddat and should bring proof that the earlier marriage ended. A man who already has a wife must obtain prior permission from the Arbitration Council under section 6 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961. A second marriage without permission exposes the husband to penalties and to claims by the existing wife.

Foreign spouses and overseas Pakistanis

A foreign national may marry a Pakistani in Lahore with a valid passport and visa. Where the Nikah will be used for a spouse visa abroad, the receiving embassy may require the NADRA certificate and attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We explain these later steps before the Nikah so that the documents are prepared correctly from the start.

Family objections after Court Marriage in Lahore

Some couples face threats or false complaints from relatives after marrying by choice. Keep the Nikah Nama, affidavits and registration record safe and carry copies. Where there is a real threat, our Lahore advocates can advise on approaching the police or the court for protection. Do not ignore a summons or police notice.

Frequently asked questions

Does court marriage take place in a court?

No. The Nikah is performed at a lawyer's office by a Nikah Registrar before two adult witnesses, and then registered with the Union Council. The word "court" refers to the legal documentation, such as free-will affidavits, that lawyers prepare.

What is the minimum age?

As firm policy we assist only where both the bride and the groom are 18 or over, verified from the original CNIC. We do not arrange any Nikah involving a minor.

Can a woman marry without her father's consent?

Yes. In Hafiz Abdul Waheed v. Asma Jehangir (PLD 2004 SC 219), the Supreme Court upheld a Nikah contracted by an adult Muslim woman without her wali's consent. Her own free consent remains essential.

How many witnesses are required?

Two adult Muslim witnesses: two men, or one man and two women under the Hanafi school. They need not be relatives. Each must bring an original CNIC so that their details can be entered on the Nikah Nama.

Will I get the NADRA marriage certificate the same day?

No promise can be made. The Nikah must first be registered with the Union Council, which then issues the computerised certificate through NADRA's system. Timing differs between Union Councils in Lahore.

Can a married man marry again through court marriage?

Only with prior permission of the Arbitration Council under section 6 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961. Without it, the husband faces penalties and claims by the existing wife. We do not proceed without the required permission.

Can a foreigner marry in Lahore?

Yes, with a valid passport and visa. If the marriage will support a spouse visa, the embassy may need the NADRA certificate and Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. We explain the steps before the Nikah.

What should a divorced woman bring?

Proof that the earlier marriage ended, such as a divorce effectiveness certificate, khula decree or death certificate of the former husband, and confirmation that the iddat period has been completed.

Where is your Lahore office?

At Al-Mairaj Arcade, Chauburji Chowk, Lahore. Appointments are fixed after the documents are checked on WhatsApp, and the exact location is shared when the appointment is confirmed. Please do not arrive without an appointment, as the Nikah Registrar and witnesses must be arranged.

How do I start a Court Marriage in Lahore?

Send both CNICs, and any previous-marriage documents, on WhatsApp to +92 333 1127835. We confirm eligibility and the documents still needed, quote the fee and fix an appointment at our Chauburji Chowk office.
